Bosses at the US drinks giant revealed it was heading towards a "unique" break with tradition by producing an alcopop-style drink, known as Chu-Hi, for its Japanese market.
The new product could hit shelves in Japan this year.
Chu-Hi is described as a flavoured-sparkling water drink that "proved particularly attractive to female drinkers," according to the Financial Times .
Cans can contains up to 8% alcohol by volume.
President of Coca-Cola's Japanese arm Jorge Garduño announced the move in an interview on the Coca-Cola website last month.
